Scrawlrbox July and August

So here are July and Augusts Boxes

I think Julys box was quite interesting as it was liquid graphite! something I've never heard of before, its werid to use too and I am not sure the 'colours' work. but anyway the prompt was Mother nature, i think? so I was stumped with that again.
So I drew a skull! who's suprised anymore?! lol

And this is Augusts box which I am excited about as I've been on a bit of an acrylic binge at the moment and I can't wait to use these!

Adventures with EVA foam.

Now I am not a cosplayer nor do I make props but for some reason when Kamui Cosplay posted a PDF of how to make skulls with EVA foam I just HAD to do it.

But I dont have any EVA foam or experience with the stuff....

So after a little bit of research I found where I could get some foam in the UK, along with the foam clay that I wanted to use on the skull: Poly props. I also got some contact adhesive from amazon.

Now I dont have a printer so I thought I could trace the pdf pattern from my monitor if the image was scaled to 100%, it wasn't until I had completed one side of the skull that I realised it was too big. So I popped the pdf on a usb stick and found a photocopier to print the pieces the right size lol.

After working my first attempt, (which wasnt really a failure as I got to practice with the glue on the foam) I started with the face plate part of the skull to be sure it was scaled correctly this time. A few hours later and I had completed the whole top of the skull, the jaw i'm still confused about how it attaches.

Anyway here is its current state:

Next I need to test primers and paints on the scrap bits of foam and also play around with the foam clay as I have never used the stuff before.

I'm using 5mm white foam as I plan on painting this skull as realistic as possible so I thought that a white base would be eaiser to paint instead of black and trying to get it white. Watch this space.....

2020 Scrawlrboxes so far

 Februarys box

March's Box

I loved April's box so much that I did multiples, including a self portait.

Then I aslo bought an old box from the shop which I think was Jan 2017, and I LOVE how my drawing came out!

Scrawlrbox update

So this was December's Scrawlrbox and I nearly ruined the surprise for myself as I forgot to unfollow the hashtag #scrawlrchallenge on instagram and was happily scrolling through, saw a picture of a rose then looked at the comments and saw it was the scrawlrbox I hadn't received yet. Then it was too late as I had started to read the comments and I was sure it said pastel pencils, so when my box arrived I was not as excited as I already knew what it was. Buuuuuut I had misread it in my sleep deprived state the PROMPT was pastel petals and the theme of the box was pastel colours, so I was super happy when these pens popped out.

Here's a skull drawn with the Derwent colouring pencils from October's box.

and another from September's box.

Scrawlrbox have emailed us this month to say the box will be late so it could be another week or so before I get January's box.

ScrawlrBox Saturday

So this was June's box and I am so happy to finally try Chameleon pencils (June's Box last year was Chameleon pens). Nice to have another black pen to add to my collection lol, and this box has 10 sheets of paper! plus one sheet of tracing paper. The glue pen I will probably end up not using and adding it to the stationery box.

Twisted Reality is the prompt and I am unsure how I can incorporate skulls into it lol.

A little something I am working on

Got an idea for a project that need skulls in, so instead of buying skulls that might not be the right size I decided to try and sculpt my own. Using my replica skull as reference and a guide this is what I did.

Made from super sculpey and painted with acrylics.

Naked skull.

Anyway i should probably get on with the rest of the project lol.

Scrawlrbox January 2018

January's Scrawlrbox dropped on the mat last week and here it is:

I am in two minds about this box, I like the Blackwing pencil and I like the Edding pen, the sketchbook is nice but the Magic Markers I feel are not going to work on the paper, or at least they are going to cause issues, not sure on the colours. Anyway as I said in a previous blog, I was super inspired by my new skull and I tried out this box straight away:

First off the Blackwing pencil is very dark and does not like being rubbed out at least not on this paper. The Markers worked as expected on this paper, scratchy and I had to put the print that came with the box between the sheets to stop it bleeding through on to the next sheet. I only used one pen as I couldn't really work out how I was going to add the blush colour into my drawing. Anyway I like the skull and it was a good test run of the art supplies.

The prompt is Starlet so for the ScrawlrChallenge I am going to have to come up with something that fits, hmmmm....

My new friend

As I have been a bit obsessed with skulls in the last year, one of the things I have wanted is a full sized human skull replica to be able to make my own reference images from. And here she is:

I really love her! perfect for me to get whatever angle I want and not have to rely on the internet. I can shine a lamp on her at different angles for exciting and moody shadows.

Jaw is hinged and the top comes off to have a look inside which is also super interesting and fascinating to learn how everything works. If I was sure that polymer clay wouldn't melt or damage the skull I would attempt to put muscles on and learn about them too.

Pretty kool hey?
